Complexity — simple link-based pages sell for $5–15. Full OS with linked databases, filtered views, formulas, and rollups justify $29–79.
Audience willingness to pay — Realtors and coaches pay more (business ROI). Students pay less. Price to the value your buyer gets, not the hours you spent.
What's included — tutorials (video or text walkthrough), setup guide, bonus templates, and lifetime updates all lift perceived value and let you charge 20–40% more.
Platform — Gumroad buyers typically pay more than Etsy buyers for digital tools. Consider listing on both.
Buyer willingness to pay is only half the pricing picture - what each platform actually keeps from a sale is the other half. On a $20 template:
| Fee | Etsy | Gumroad (direct sale) |
|---|---|---|
| Platform / listing fee | $0.20 flat | 10% + $0.50 = $2.50 |
| Transaction / processing | 6.5% + (3% + $0.25) = $2.15 | 2.9% + $0.30 (card) = $0.88 |
| Total fees | $2.35 | $3.38 |
| You keep | $17.65 (88.3%) | $16.62 (83.1%) |
At this price point Etsy's fee structure actually keeps you more per sale, because Gumroad's fixed $0.50 platform charge and $0.30 card fee weigh disproportionately on lower-priced digital items. The gap narrows as price increases, since fixed fees matter less at higher prices - and it's a separate question from whether Gumroad buyers tolerate a higher list price in the first place, which can offset the fee difference entirely. Gumroad's Discover marketplace (as opposed to direct sales via your own link) charges a flat 30% instead, which changes this comparison substantially if that's a meaningful traffic source for you.
Bundling 3-4 related templates (e.g. a client CRM + invoice tracker + project log for freelancers) typically prices at 60-70% of what the same templates would cost bought separately - buyers perceive this as a discount even though the bundle usually generates more total revenue per sale than a single template would on its own. A bundle also gives price-sensitive buyers a mid-tier option between your cheapest single template and your most comprehensive system, which can lift overall conversion across your whole shop rather than just the bundle listing itself.
